Service Area · West Seattle, WA
West Seattle is a peninsula, and the trees here grow with that reality in mind. Southwest wind off Puget Sound, Duwamish exposure on the east side, and salt air that puts stress on anything growing close to the bluff face. The Admiral and Fauntleroy neighborhoods have mature ornamentals and formal hedges that need regular care. Morgan Junction and Gatewood have Douglas fir and western cedar over homes that were built before the trees became the size they are now. The Pacific madrone growing along the rocky Sound-facing slopes near Lincoln Park are among the most distinctive trees anywhere in our service area.
Seattle's tree regulations apply throughout, and the steep-slope and shoreline overlays affect a significant share of the bluff-top properties. We check parcel designations before scoping anything near the edge.
Bluff-side view pruning, Pacific madrone care, wind-exposed conifer assessments, and ornamental maintenance in the residential neighborhoods.
01
Conifer risk assessments on bluff-top and wind-exposed properties — trees that have taken decades of weather and are worth evaluating before another storm season.
02
Pacific madrone specialty pruning along the Sound-facing bluff and in Lincoln Park-adjacent yards.
03
View pruning on Sound-facing properties with careful canopy management and attention to neighboring sightlines.
04
Formal hedge and ornamental maintenance in Admiral, Fauntleroy, and Alki.
05
Technical removal in space-constrained lots near the bluff edge and around older homes.
Significant tree threshold
trees 6" DBH or larger require a Seattle permit before removal.
Steep-slope and landslide hazard areas
significant portions of the West Seattle bluff carry critical-area designations; ground disturbance near the edge requires additional review.
Shoreline master program
Puget Sound and Duwamish waterway frontage properties have additional requirements beyond the tree code.
Grove protection
natural tree clusters on private property may be regulated as a grove under Seattle's ordinance.
THE CODE
The bluff carries both steep-slope and shoreline designations at the same time. Any removal or ground work near the bluff face requires parcel-level review before we scope. We check both before anything is quoted.
ON THE GROUND
Salt-tolerant species on the bluff face, wind-shaped conifers at the edge, and mature ornamentals in the neighborhoods behind.
Douglas fir
dominant in the interior neighborhoods; wind-loaded bluff-top specimens are the primary risk concern.
Pacific madrone
significant presence along the Sound-facing bluff; specialty pruning required, different from standard conifer work.
Bigleaf maple
characteristic of the older Admiral and Morgan Junction neighborhoods; summer branch drop applies on large specimens.
Western red cedar
common in sheltered interior yards; heat-dome top dieback visible on some properties.
Shore pine
present on exposed bluff-top sites; structural concerns increase steadily as these trees age.
